This assignment is from a general education class, American History. We were required to choose a document from our textbook and explain what event led to the event, the rationale behind it, and what resulted from it. I chose to write about a speech given by President Wilson about the reasons he had for wanting to enter into World War I. A big part of this assignment was looking into the motives for entering the war. I have never been able to understand why war is necessary, but after my research, I was able to understand why President Wilson made the decision that he did. To do well on this assignment, I really had to put myself in the place of President Wilson and try to figure out what types of things he had to think about before making the decision.
This artifact shows the attempt to have a better, deeper understanding of the past. It demonstrates seeing varying viewpoints and how they connect to one another in the history of the United States. I would like to become better at understanding the viewpoints of others and why they believe what they do. I think I did well on this assignment because of how I put myself into the shoes of the person I was researching. I think that is a good way to see their perspectives. Especially if it was from a time you may not be familiar with.
