Pictures of Classroom At Palmer Elementary
Although I did not create the physical environment of the classroom, I believe I will create something similar for my own classroom. I love that the tables are sectored into groups. Even though it sometimes makes it challenging for the children to look to the front of the classroom to see the whiteboard, projector, teacher, etc., it makes it so much easier to allow the students to work in groups. I also believe that this can facilitate the children to learn that learning can be done without staring at one spot of the room the whole day. This set up allows the students to work collaboratively whenever needed or wanted by the teacher. Groupings can be done to allow struggling students to sit by higher-level students, students who misbehave to sit by well-behaved students., or any other groupings that seem to be best for all learners.
Another feature I would include in my own classroom is displays of "I Can" statements around the classroom to tell or show learners and observers the outcomes for lessons and units. I think its important to keep outcomes obvious instead of a mystery to figure out. These pictures show the "I Can" statements posted on the subject specific boards throughout the room.
The last thing from these pictures that I would like to mention is the individual book bins on each of the desks. The book bins serve so many purposes in the classroom. Each child has their own to hold several personal books and/or some for the Accelerated Reader program. They are right in front of them so they can pull out a book as soon as they step into the classroom, when they finish an activity early, or any other down time throughout the day. They can also be moved to create a blockade between the students for tests or other activities for which you want to prevent any wandering eyes.
The learning environment I want to provide allows for collaborative learning, in which students can be supportive of one another and be actively engaged in their own learning and the learning of others.
