This lesson is part of the Everyday Math program used at Palmer Elementary. I found that I had to change the lesson a little to fit the needs of the students and the allotted time. This lesson was one of the first to beginning learning about medians. We went outside to measure the length of each students standing jumps (jumping forward with both feet together without a running start), then lined up in the gym in numerical order. The highest and lowest numbers had to step forward--this continued until there was only one person left. After returning to the classroom, we discussed how the person left in the middle was the median. There were the same amount of numbers higher than that person as numbers lower. The students seemed really engaged the whole time, and I love any lesson that lets students get up out of their seats and especially out of the classroom. I think its really important to show that learning doesn't just happen facing the teacher who is writing on the whiteboard. I think this lesson is an example of an authentic learning experience which was engaging and meaningful to all students.
