This is a plan that I made for Daily 5 at my placement at Palmer Elementary. Daily 5 happens 2-3 times a week for this class, and since my placement was at the end of the year, the students were very familiar with the format. I chose dictionary skills as the word work choice because my cooperating teacher said she wanted them to have more practice. "Mitchell is Moving" was the book to listen to for the whole week, and the read to self/someone options are always the same. The small group instruction was planned to accompany "Cowboys", the main story of the unit. With each group, I read through the story once. Then I asked if they heard any words that might tell us the order of the story, or the time words. They were able to pick out most of them. I read the story again, and asked them to raise their hands when I read one of the time words. Next, there was a list of events from the story, which I asked the students to put in order from first to last. They seemed to have a little more trouble with this.
I think this relates to standard 1 because I provided an appropriate but challenging learning experience. I followed the format that my cooperating teacher used with the students for the rest of the year. The lesson followed the plans of the reading unit. I think it worked well to scaffold the learning by listening to the story, talking about the time words, and then listening to it again, paying special attention to the time words. If I could change one thing, it would be to have a better plan for the last part of rearranging the events into the correct sequence. The students really had a hard time figuring out the order, especially with the few in the middle of the sequence, but I think it went well once I helped them through it.
